Chapter 7

“Do you have time for breakfast?” I asked, after Thomas’ had started to stir awake.

“I think so.” He said, as he let his sleepy eyes examine the watch, which he had slept in all night.

“I’ll go put something together.” I said, as I pulled myself over to the edge of the bed. I had slept skin to skin with him the night before, but I didn’t want to walk across the room on full show, so I was looking for something I could throw on that was in reach. As I looked on the floor I noticed an oversized T-shirt I slept in often and reached out for it, but as I leant forward, I felt his arms wrap around my middle and pull me towards him.

“What’s the rush?” He asked, as he nuzzled his face into my neck.

The feel of his breath against my neck made my skin fill with goose bumps and my eyes close in enjoyment, but I pulled away from him quickly, as I kept the thought of him leaving soon in my mind. “You’re leaving soon remember?” I said without any hint of sadness.

“Well darling, I guess you have a point.” Thomas said with what sounded like regret in his voice. “There is one thing though, that I wanted to talk to you about before I leave.” He said, as he sat up and his face filled with a serious look, which I had never seen there before.

“Is everything okay?” I asked, as I tried to read his reaction, but my brain couldn’t come up with a solution, which seemed likely.

“Everything’s fine, but we need to talk; shall we go out for breakfast?” He said, as he pulled on his pants and picked up the shirt, which had been sitting in a pile next to it.

“Do you want to?” I asked, as I had no aversion to cooking something up for us.

“Sure, it saves you from being left with the washing up.” Thomas said with a smile on his face, which I tried to match with my own, but there was something hallow about smiling when you don’t have a reason to and I could see that Thomas could tell.

There was a café at the end of my street and it didn’t take us long to walk the short distance after we had got dressed. It was still early in the morning and the sun was yet to make its way fully into the sky, but it was warm and the air was still with the absence of any breeze. I let Thomas take my hand and wrap his fingers though mine, as we walked and when we got to the café, he held the door, as I walked through.

My mind was so focused on the fact that these were my last few moments with him that I paid no attention to the fact that he had said that he wanted to speak to me about something. I kept trying to think of ways,
